The state of California has a rather diverse climate with the majority of California have dry summers and rainy, cool winter months. Along the coast, summer fog is created by the cool currents. As you move more inland, the winter months tend to be colder and the summers hotter. There tends to be more rainfall within the northern areas of the state as opposed to the southern. Amongst the rainiest areas are found on the mountain slopes of California State which face west, while the east sides of the mountain ranges produce a rain shadow, creating expansive deserts. Death Valley is a low-elevation desert, producing the hottest temperatures on the continent. Higher elevation deserts of eastern California produce hot summer months and cold winters. The Central Valley has a Mediterranean weather condition but greater extremes compared to the shoreline. The Sierra Nevada Mountains have moderate to mild heat during the summer months and snow in wintertime.
